Using Rocketfuel
Penn 535 GS
Like the 525GS the 535GS has a large bearing in the gearbox end and a smaller bearing is in the opposite endplate. Be careful when removing the small bearing as there is a copper washer under it that acts as a spacer/wear plate for the spool spindle.
The oil and amount you use depends on what you want to do with your 535. For general fishing with say 18lb mono use a couple of drops of Red Rocket Fuel in the small bearing and a good dollop of Yellow in the large one. Being large – 17mm diameter – it will hold a lot of oil so you should be able to get away with the Yellow oil as long as you put plenty in. For heavy ground work with a lot of heavy line you are better going to Red RF in both bearings for extra control.
The reel is usually supplied with brakes in situ but not engaged. To activate the brake blocks click them over the first boss so they move all the way to the end of the pin but do not come off as they are held by the outer boss.
If it runs too fast on Yellow go up to Red in both bearings and if you have problems with the Red try some XS, but you are unlikely to need this unless you overfill the spool. Remember, the line weighs as much as spool, effectively doubling the centrifugal force at the start of the cast and will need considerably more braking to maintain control.
| Gear Ratio : | 6:1 |
| Brakes : | Two centrifugal plastic blocks |
| End Tension : | Set end float so there is a little lateral movement |
| Fishing Tune : | Red Rocket Fuel in small bearing & Yellow in large bearings, engage both blocks |
| Pro's : | Holds plenty of line and gets it back quickly, bombproof |
| Con's : | Like its little brother no real vices |
